I wanted to be a good girl and make my parents proud of me, but this was not—and had never been—enough to make Shirl like me. So I had to quit and let my teammates down. It ruined a couple of friendships, because I was seen as unreliable. It’s hard to explain to normal people in their twenties that you’re still not allowed to make your own decisions about your life.
